Question Buying 2010 GT at invoice price ?

In September 2006 I bought my Mustang GT 2007 at invoice price minus $300. The car was custom made for me. I was waiting 7-8 weeks to be manufactured and delivered to the dealer. The whole negotiation process at the dealership was stress free. I was very well prepared with all the options, MSR and invoice prices, etc.
Now I want to trade in 2007 for the new 2010. Times changed. Dealers are struggling, at least most of them. Ford sales dropped 46% compared to last year. I want to get the same deal that I got 2,5 year ago. This time I will have to take under consideration also the trade in value but I am prepared for this as well.
What do you think. Does anyone have any experience with negotiations in the last months? Are there more chances to get a good deal?

I am the Business Manager at a Ford Store in Canada.... right now there are no programs (incentives) on the 2010 Mustang.. usually there is either a Delivery Allowance or a Subvened Interest Rate (0% for example), but right now there isnt anything... my suggestion is to wait until there are, if you want the best deal ... as far as paying Invoice for it, yes that is a dealers cost, but if there is a Delivery Allowance or any other cash incentives, you must take that into account as well... because a dealer could say that they are giving it to you for $300 less than invoice but there is a $2000 Delivery Allowance, so the dealer is still making $1700, which is okay... I think a dealer deserves to make that on a $40 or $50,000 car. Trading your 2007 in is where you will lose the most, the dealer can give you the best deal possible, but as I said there are no incentives from Ford Motor Co. at this point, in Canada anyway.

There are still 2008's, as well as 2009's sitting on the lots, so don't expect any deals on this "2009 1/2" Mustang! If you want invoice maybe December 31?

My local dealership is so dead that when I went there today, with the 2009 brochure in hand, they didn't even bother to get off the telephone to ask if I wanted any help!
Loos like I might as well buy over the Internet!
I am still waiting to see Grabber Blue and Sunset Gold in person so I can make up my mind.

When I was buying the 2007 GT there were also 2006 cars on the lot and they didn't have any problem selling the new one for the invoice. Why this time would be different? Especially that the dealerships are pretty dead nowdays.

Find an 09. You will save money and get the same car minus the new body/interior. That is what I did. And I LOVE my car!

Search the internet. There are tons of great resources and tips to read up on about beating car salesmen at their own game. These guys are professionals and play the game every day. You play the game once every 3-5 years when you go to buy a car. It's like putting a Michael Jordan up against a 7th grader just learning to play basketball. It's an unfair advantage.

They're going to pull out all the stops to get the most out of you. It's only fair that you do the same. Take some time and research. Just by learning how the game is played you can negotiate a huge savings for yourself.

Thanks Biceps. yes, that's what I did in 2006 when I bought by 2007 GT. We came to the dealer well prepared. I already did some homework and asking those questions here is part of this. Unfortunately the buyer does not have access to some information that the dealer does but I will try to "loose" as little as possible.

So I went to the dealer today, well prepared and ready to make a deal. I built a Mustang GT 2010 with all the options I wanted and the salesman gave me the price, The MSRP. I have tried to go the negotiations steps but the dealer said could not do anything about it. he went to the manager who came up to me and said that he could not do anything about the price. He didn't even try to negotiate. I was pretty stunned. They were very nice, thanked for coming, etc, etc but no last attempt when I was leaving the dealership. I saw amount of cars the dealers sold this month (they have a table with all names well in sight) and trust me there were just a few cars sold and some salesmen didn't sell anything.
I can buy GT for MSRP anywhere. Don't they know it?
I will try a different dealership tomorrow if I can.
