Water in the tank

Water in the tank
I stopped at a gas station yesterday, when I opened the gas lid and pulled out the cap I noticed that all the pumps where shut off.
I went to the closest station and waited, in the pouring rain, while the person ahead of me filled up and moved on.
When I got outside of the car, I noticed that I left the lid open and the cap off. I am positive water got in there.
What should I look out for in case I took on too much water? If so, how screwed am I?
Damn, I shouldn't even be driving this car in rain.

So lets get this straight....you went how far before getting it filled up while it was raining? You might be fine as the overfill hole is right below it and if any water was in the gas cap area or drained down into it it may have been sent on down the drain hole.....does the car run right at this point?

Run the tank down low and refill with fuel CONTAINING ethanol. If there's a good bit, it may take a few tanks of fuel containing ethanol. That should help clear out most, if not all, of any water.

Im not sure how it works on cars, but i jet ski and have been told they can run on nearly 30% water before getting alot of damage. Then again thats a 2 stroke so oil is mixed with it. I really doubt there is enough water to make a difference. Its not a big opening and its a fairly large tank so its going to be very diluted.

My question at this point would be, "Why did the Fuel cap light not come on?" I'm willing to bet you did not get any water in it. If you look at the your fuel filler you will see that it is rased and water can't pool in it do to the over fill drain hole.

Add the contents of a bottle of Iso-HEET to the fuel tank. This absorbs water. If you don't notice any difference in the way the car runs after adding the Iso-HEET, then you should be fine. If the car runs a bit rough, then the Iso-HEET picked up some water and combined it with the gas. Continue to add Iso-HEET to each tankful of gas until the car runs smoothly.
Remember, the car could run fine and still have water in the gas tank. The water tends to collect at the bottom of the tank.
