Default Air Box modification... sounds alittle meaner at WOT, free mod?

I was just looking at my stock air box and I noticed there is a plastic extension tube that attaches to the airbox, it pops right off. After taking it off it looks like it allows more air into the airbox but that comes with a prices, a louder intake sound.

I just took my car for a quick run and it sounds a little louder at WOT and maybe a little more punch to it.

Anyone ever done this? Sorry I'm new, this may have been talked about before.

I did this with my 95 maxima. Well I cut a hole in the airbox, so similar. Sounded mean as hell at WOT.

On my stang I can't hear the intake over the exhaust.

Haha, I did this the first day i got the car. I looked under the hood and just went "Thats not doing anything to important, and I'd be better off." I however cant say it changed the sound at all, glad to know somebody else did it though!

The intake from the airbox to the TB is still restricted so opening the stock intake a bit won't gain you much, if any, performance. It would still be less added "punch" than a CAI that doesn't require a tune and those are barely butt-dyno worth it (maybe 5 RWHP).

Put your $$ towards a good CAI & tune combo from Brenspeed or Bama (15-25 or more RWHP).

Would not that change the Air/Fuel ratio meaning that eventually you would need a tune or you'll ruin you engine? Maybe I am wrong...someone smarter that me can chime in...

The change in airflow is so minimal that the stock tune can compensate.

What about routing a hose to the air box opening to force more air into it? Would that be bad/good?

It would still provide less gains than a standalone CAI but would add a tad more sound. You have to remember that it's not just the air flow INTO the airbox that is restrictive but also from the box to the TB, including the stock filter. Adding a drop-in K&N or Amsoil still would be of little to no use.

For those of you thinking about this as a method to forgo a good CAI & tune; suck it up. Save your pennies and get a CAI & tune combo. Only going FI will give you more wood.
