Definitely an overfill issue. No such thing as a set of gears that builds up more pressure than another set. Sounds to me like theyre pulling your chain to save face.

let me know how that oil does. I might switch just for the heck of it in a couple thousand miles. I drove it pretty good last weekend and its been in the garage since then, so im going to crawl under it when we get some nicer weather this weekend and check it out.

Mine with 4.10's does leak a bit. Is there a wright up on changing the gear oil. I would appreciate any guidance, as I would like to change to Amsoil as well. Thanks!

so i got underneith it yesterday and saw a good sized puddle under the axle ... and it hasnt been driven since last weekend. How long should this be leaking out if its an overfill issue ??

also, how can this continue to be normal ? If it keeps leaking out, wont there be not enough gear oil in the rear end ???

If nearly 3 quarts were put in, that is definitely overfilled!
Take out the front drain plug and let the excess run out. The top of the fluid is supposed to be about 1/2" below the fill hole, and not full up to it.

But the vent is doing what it is supposed to do.

update 7/7/09

checked the axle a few days ago when i had it up on the lift and it is still wet / damp and you can see the dried up gear oil on the axle... should this still be leaking ?

Yeah. The 8.8 takes 4.25 pints + 4oz of friction modifier. ( 72 ounces )
3 Quarts=96 ounces wow..... let some out.....

I've never changed the fluid in the diff. Do you have to remove the cover to do so or is there a drain/fill plug?

You guys know the V8 S197 calls for a heavier Fluid right?
its not 75w90
the mustang calls for synthetic only
also it takes a heavier lube than your truck

it uses the 3rd one down

I would just remove the fill plug and see if it drains out there. If it's over filled, fluid will come out of the fill plug. That should be sufficient. I filled mine to the bottom of the fill plug with Royal Purple 75W-140.
