air/fuel gauge

air/fuel gauge
i recently had an air to fuel gauge installed, but the gauge is not reading accurately. the gauge will bounce from lean-ideal-rich, never sticking on one spot. the guy who installed it said it was because i have no cats. is this true or was it a bad install

What kind? A wideband? The A/F ratio should be changing constantly except at wide-open-throttle. It never stays at one number at idle or partial throttle.
Are you running forced induction or nitrous? Otherwise what is the need for an air/fuel meter?

because it looks cool duh lol i love the look of the pillar a/f ratio gauges and boost gauge, thats actually another reason i cant wait for a supercharger

When you are at a steady RPM or idle you should see it stable at around 14.5.. When at WOT, you should see about 11.4-11.8 (possibly into the very low 12's with no FI). Otherwise, it will bounce all over, especially after getting off the throttle, or if you are changing throttle position a lot.

During part-throttle engine operation, the computer 'switches' between lean and rich conditions every 2/3 a second or so. As a result, a wideband will fluctuate in value along those variations as well.
The real benefit and use of a wideband is during WOT, when the above does not occur, and so you get to see the constant air/fuel ratio; and during wot, especially in a f/i setup, you need to make sure you are not running too lean.

i dont want to hijack this thread but i see no reason to start a new one.
i just recently installed my A/F wideband AEM gauge. I am NA with a C&L CAI with Bama 93 race tune, and LT headers with catted H pipe. Yesterday was an extremely hot and humid day but it was the first day i got it working.
On idle the A/F ratio was fluctuating between 14-15. When i reved the engine the number shot up past 16. Is this normal? The CAI intake temp on my interceptors was 102 degrees F so it was extremely hot. Im thinking when the car is moving and the ram air is blowing air over the intake the temp should go down some?
