Default WTF...how do you check tire pressure

I have low profile 20's on my 2007 gt.

I have always just checked the air pressure, by eyeballing it and then pumping in more to make sure it's not flat at all. Anyways, I bought 2 kinds of pressure guages from the auto store: A pencil one, and a dial one.

It seems like both of them give me a different reading everytime I try. Depending on how hard I press it onto the stem or the fraction of a second difference in timing. I have gotten as low as 30psi and as high as 70 psi.

What am I doing wrong? It seems impossible to accurately gauge the pressure...

The front right tire now has a massive bulge in it, and the car shakes when I drive it.

I am pretty sure the tire is F'd and I need a new tire there now.

Broken belt probably explains the tire. And yeah, its F'ed if thats true.

Just stick the gauge squarely on the valve stem and press down to create the best seal possible. You shouldn't hear much air escaping if any. It's typically hard to do that though. At least with the crap gauge I have.

I have one of those chinese made dial gauges. There is a "sweet spot" as far as pressure goes. If you don't get it right the thing will usually read high on me.

I do that and i press it for under a second...(my gauge goes up to 60psi)...and it maxes out every time

Bad gauge or you actually have way to much air in the tire. If you've been pumping air in without a gauge then that may be possible.

I've got a dial gauge. I'm thinking of getting a digital one. I've heard they're the most accurate. Kinda makes sense to me. I'd figure even just momentum can cause the dial or pencil gauges to read high.

I use an extension hose. It's designed for use on hard to reach spares in the trunk or "hidden" SUV and light truck spares. I find it's much easier to check the pressure on my road tires by using the extension hose rather than trying to press the tire pressure gauge valve directly onto the tire's valve stem.

I bought a talking digital gauge on clearance some years back. I love that thing.
