Rear brakes wore out before fronts
#11
My car is in for its 60K service. I took it to a local mechanic that I've been using for over 10 years. He said the back brake pads were worn out, so I had him replace them. The fronts are good, though, which is strange because these are the original factory pads. I've never had a car that wore out the back pads before the front ones. Is this normal for an 07 GT? I thought maybe it might be the, uh, thing that controls the balance between the front and rear brakes (sorry, can't remember what the name of that thing is) but he said that's controlled by the ABS system.
Anybody know enough about the brakes on these cars to shed some light on this?

Damn, you beat me to it. Any time you engage the Traction Control on our cars, it uses the rear brakes to control tire spin, so if you end up activating TC very frequently, that could be the problem. We also have much larger brakes up front so the heat is dissipated through the pads and rotors much better than out back and once the stock pads heat up, they wear faster.

Okay, that makes me feel better. I just wanted to make sure I didn't need to look for some kind of problem. I guess I really should turn off TCS unless the road is wet. I don't do burn outs, but I do engage in "spirited driving" LOL. OTOH, 60K on a set of pads is not too bad.

I just thought I'd chime in on this topic. I have 59,000 miles on my ORIGINAL front brakes. I had the rears replaced once. I drive it everyday, and for the first two years of it's life, it delt with heavy stop and go traffic. The car was inspected in early March and I was told there was plenty of pad and the rotors were good. It shocked the hell out of me. So, from experience, don't worry.

my 09 had a little over 12000 miles on it before i instaled the brenspeed stage 2 brake upgrade. i have the same problem with mine. i actualy noticed that my rear rotors were wearing down. had a small lip on them on the outermost section of the rotor where the pads dont touch. i recomend running your fingernail over them to check for that. i am currently stationed in germany and drive very aggresivly. so maby take that in mind.
