Well my car just did the same thing. I notice that it is definitely heat related. When I am cruising around in a lower gear, especially a parade or something similar, it will come on and then when the car cools down, it returns to normal.

Just checked the ground connection mentioned above and found it had rust around the head of the bolt. I cleaned it, replaced the bolt, installed a star washer, and also ran an extra ground wire from that point to another grounding screw just for redundancy. So far so good.... I also used the liquid electrical tape on the connection to keep moisture from getting back to that connection.
