20+ MPG City with fuel filter change...
Ok, I changed my fuel filter a few days ago with about a quarter tank left and instantly noticed I was getting more miles to a tank. I really started to pay more attention when I filled up yesterday and the car readout showed me I had gained 80 miles per tank from what I was usually getting...also my MPG readout increased to around 20.7 City.
Is this legit from just a fuel filter change?

It had about 72,2xx on it and before I changed the filter I would normally get about 200 or so miles to a tank.
I just checked the readout and the numbers are:
7.1 gallons used for 144.2 miles with 158 miles to E

Interesting how people try to judge a fuel mileage change based on 1 , 2 or even 3 tanks of gas,
There are so many variables, even if you've driven the exact same route in the same manner day after day, that judging any change to your mileage is nearly impossible without numerous data points. I DO believe and hope you've had gains but I think you're being a bit overly optimistic based on a single data point.

I doubt you are going to see repeated gains like that.
It's surprising how 1 bad tank of gas though can really screw up your car. ****ty gas from 1 station can clog up that puppy and do a real #.
BTW, it's a good idea to change the fuel filter every 15,000 miles...and more frequently if you have bad gas locally

I plan to go through a few tanks to see if these numbers can be maintained. I remain optimistic but still somewhat pessimestic.
Tylus: Yeah bad gas can really mess things up...you just never know. I bet it was almost completely clogged for sure.

So you should change your fuel filter about every 2-3 oil changes? Bad gas? I suggest for anyone who thinks there is bad gas out there to watch modern marvels or even 20/20 a few weeks back. It all comes from the same place. All the brands of gas are identical, they do add in detergents later on but 100% of it is the same. From your no name gas station to the branded stations it's all the same. No such thing as bad gas. It's all in people's heads.
Do not change your fuel filter every 15k miles, it's a waste of money.
