Don't forget, their is a TSB on the ebrake for the 05-06's, with regard to them freezing in place in cold weather, due to water entering the cable sheathing... where there is water, there could be rust, creating drag and accounting for the difference in feel between your car and your friend's...

Or just leave it in either first or reverse. As long as you aren't on much of a slope, engine compression is all you really need.

I realize that the handle isn't oriented for easiest operation, and you can probably blame the interior design/styling crew for that. Of three cars I have with handbrakes, the Mustang's is by far the most cumbersome to use. I think when it's in the 'set' position it's not in a position or orientation where the driver has very good leverage to both pull the lever up (to unload the mechanism) while simultaneously releasing the mechanism with the button.

Is it the lifting of the lever or the pushing of the button that's giving more trouble?

I think some cars will automatically release the P-brake when you start driving.

The Mustang is not one of them, so you have to get into either of two habits. Not using the P-brake at all, or remembering to release it every time.

My wife's new Legacy 2.5GT has an electrically operated P-brake that does release itself at least when you drive away in 1st gear (it's a stick shift). Subaru claims that it gives more room around the shifter. I still hate it.
