How do you guys remove the rear faux gas cap?

Joe, when you have it off, don't mess around with the goo gone cr@p... You'll be there forever. All the 3M tape will remain on the trunk, since the cap isn't flat behind it.
Also, said cap has 2 big alignment pins and therefore 2 big holes on the trunk lid.

Get the rubber wheel "eraser" and mount it on a drill to remove the left over 3M tape.
Much quicker...

^+1! Luckily when I did mine last week my brother in law, who was helping, had one of those eraser wheels at his shop and that thing is amazing. It went so much faster with the eraser wheel.

Actually, pushing hard on it is what will hurt the paint for sure.
Too much friction, too much heat.

I just pulled mine off with hand power but granted it was 105 degree TX heat at the time...and 10 miles on the car.

my rear cap came off pretty easy using fishing line, but the adhesive took forever..

I took a metal joint compound spreader, took a shop rag and taped it around the spreader, and it slid in there and took the cap off and most of the tape, I did it in summer so I was able to just peel the rest of the tape off with my fingers.
