It seems as though these blowout problems are with pre-2007 models. That is, no TPMS. Yes, I know some people don't like that the government mandated TPMS. But...

You are right, I was going to say, this may have been an instance when TPMS "may" have just saved you.


2 ways to look at it. If it was a front tire, he might have been able to feel a low tire before it failed.....maybe.
Also, in a panic situation, when a rear tire blows like that and the driver freaks out and nails the brakes, its possible to cause the car to go into a spin as well. Just like those handbrakes on the bigwheels!

Either way, glad damage was only a tire.
Inspect the tread area in a well lit area and you just might find a puncture hole. As well as looking on the inside of the carcass where the tread is.
99% of the time when a car came into the shop with a destroyed tire I could find the initial cause of the leak. And 99% of the time, this kind of failure is at a highway speeds.
