gears pros and cons?
Hey i eventually wanna purchase a 2010 mustang and plan on doing jus basic mods ( x-pipe, gears, flowmaster ect) what are the pros and cons of going to a 4:10 setup for gears in a 2010? it will be a weekend car with very minimum track use

I have 3.73s so they aren't nearly as bad as the 4.10s. The major downsides of gears are:
1. reduced gas mileage because of higher rpms on the highway
2. increased noise and vibration because of higher rpms on the highway
3. potential for gear whine and other problems associated with a bad install.
4. Reduced top speed
5. Have to buy a tuner to reset the speedo
The positives are
1. More torque multiplication
2. quicker acceleration and peppier feeling car
I have 3.73s and on the highway at 75-80 mph the rpm is at 2500. This has maybe reduced my combined mpg by 1 mpg. When the exhaust system was stock it did not bother me at all. Since adding the headers, the car is a lot noisier and drones a bit at 2500 rpm. I have simply reduced my highway speed to 70 when driving passengers so it is quieter and more civilized. However, I wouldn't get rid of the gears and headers because my car pulls like crazy when I want it to...

I had the crappy 3.31 in mine, and I upgraded to the 4.10. It was like a different car. Combined with a Tillman tune, the car screams.
Supposedly, if you do a least some town/city driving, the 4.10 gets better gas mileage there, making up for the lost mileage on the highway.
Downsides: With the tune, the throttle can be VERY touchy. Also, when going WOT, you run out of 1st gear quickly and need to be ready to grab 2nd. Last, it does rev high enough on the highway (almost 3000 RPM at 80 MPH), I wouldn't want to add any louder of an exhaust than what it has stock.

I had this problem with my 3.73 gear install. Terrible high pitch noise at cruising speed. They eventually went back in and was able to correct this issue for me.
