Puzzled Service Advisor at Dealer Today ...
My Car was Built 05/09/09 and I bought it last month. I had 671 miles on it so I decided to get the oil changed. Figured it was OLD oil plus all the engine break-in metal would be in oil as well.
I leave car and go looking at Mustangs in the lot. I hear my name over the loud speaker asking me to come to the service area.
Service Advisor tells me the car only has 671 mile on it and wants to make sure I wanted an oil change. I said YES ... the car was built almost 1 year ago so the oil is almost 1 year old. SHE still had a puzzled look on her face. I explained that oil is supposed to be changed every 6 months because it goes bad ... she still looked puzzled but said OK ... just wanted to make sure.

I had my first oil change at 1,000 miles and the service tech advised against it, said it wasn't necessary. He's probably right, I guess I just wanted peace of mind. I went straight to Full Synthetic.

Did my first one at 1,500 went to the dealer cause it was free. They didn't question me at all. Been doing them myself since then, at 3k, again at 6k, and will continue doing so every 3k. Using the 5w20 motorcraft synthetic blend cause it's really not that much different than full synthetic according to used oil analysis, and at $15.99 including tax for 6 quarts and the motorcraft filter, it's a great value.

I don't put lots of miles on my vehicles ... I don't drive my Mustang in the rain .. I have 2009 Wrangler for rainy days ... and during the summer I have a Motorcycle I use for work as much as I can. I can handle $30 twice a year and sometimes I do get dealer coupons for a discount. My Jeep came with 2 years of oil changes so have not changed the oil myself in that either. I do change the oil in my Motorcycle and 1971 Maverick myself ....

When I bought my car they offered me the free oil change also, but since that dealer is 45 minutes away from me I knew I wasn't going to use it. So I asked the sales lady if I could get something else in it's place. I got myself a free MASTANG license plate frame. It was a $40 value for FREE! A few weeks later they called and offered the free oil change to me anyway but I didn't take it. Driving 45 minutes and sitting on my a$$ waiting for an hour didn't really appeal to me.

the cashiers really are just there to let you know stuff that the tech has told them and look hot (well my dealer hires hot ones) other than that they dont know much about cars lol.
The dealer Im going to be getting mine at is an hour away and they offer all kinds of free stuff, and im happy to go back and service there and everything, even though my local beach ford dealer is about 10 min away. If they give me a loaner so I dont have to bug a buddy or my bro every time my car needs service.

Today's cars don't have that old issue with casting debris like our dads cars did so that wasn't an issue although, I, too, still prefer to change the factory synthetic blend by about 2k-3k miles.
Synthetic blend is good for 6 months or so; a bit more since you didn't put a lot of miles on it (although at 1 year I'm sure it wasn't hurting anything but still good you changed it). Age WAS the correct call on your part for the oil change.
Changing your own oil is simple and it gives you time to check other things on the car. Once you do it you'll kick yourself for all those times you had someone steal your money for doing it. Most townships will take your old oil if auto stores and shops won't.
