NADA and Bluebook values have very little to do with the amount a dealer will give you for a trade-in. They usually offer you the amount the car is worth at an auction. Expect $20k or less. I'd guess $18k.

I would expect a trade-in value of 17-19k, assuming the car is in great shape. I just traded mine in a few weeks ago and got 22k. It was a 2009 GT deluxe with 2900 miles and $8000 in mods including a blower, and I provided full documentation of everything (receipts, dyno sheets, maintenance logs, etc etc). It was in "excellent" condition as it pretty much sat in a garage 95% of the time, and even smelled "new". They expected to get $25k retail on mine. There is simply no way in hell yours is worth as much as $26k retail. With rebates I can walk in there right now and buy a nice 2010 for that.

There are going to be a rash of trade-ins of 2005-2010s here real quick, so I expect values to plummet even more. This was part of the reason I dumped mine when I did. I was planning to do it anyway, but figured sooner was better.

Don't sell yourself short! Redo your pricing using the good value, check pricing on auto trader for similar vehicles in your area and start your asking price from there. Also I'm not sure in your state but in fla you only pay sale tax on the difference on the total amount.
I traded in my 07 Gt/cs coupe with 3500 miles on it last september for 2010 prem coupe
and got $22,000 for it plus sales tax savings of about $1,300 dollars. Got Xplan plus $1750.00 in rebates.
Dealers still want to sell cars so bargain hard and good luck!

That's just not correct at all. If a dealership doesn't offer you the NADA trade in value of your car they are not reputable, don't deal with them. That is the whole point of the NADA. Almost all dealers will give you the NADA trade in value of your car. When I traded for my Mustang the dealer actually went $700 above NADA trade in value. I have never had a dealership offer me less than NADA for any car I have traded in and I have purchased 12 brand new cars.

NADA lists the average trade-in value for my 05 (loaded, 23k miles) at 15.2k, which is $1600 higher than what my local dealer was offering. If they're using NADA (which they should be as said above) they're going by the lowest number they can find, regardless of how well-kept the car is, and they're going to lowball that one if they can get away with it.

Of course, dealers offering 2010s for 10k off the MSRP just to get rid of them isn't helping those of us with 5.0 fever and quality trade-ins.

They may always give you NADA value for the most part, but that doesn't mean they give you the value that corresponds to its actual condition. I've owned and traded something along the lines of 20+ cars now, so I've seen every dirty trick they can attempt. Always be on the defensive on a trade-in, and try and work out a "fair" deal. Understand that they have to stock it, clean it, market it, and resell it. This costs time and money.

If you lived in Utah where you might not see many Mustangs..sure those numbers are alittle high. If ya lived in Florida or another area of the country where they are plentiful then those would be very hig numbers.

Local dealer offered me $22k for mine...2010, 18K miles...very well maintained.... reason for such low number....the area is saturated in used Mustangs

Thanks for the input, guys. I just spoke with the manager of the local Ford dealership and he confirmed that they go by NADA for used car values and that there was no "market adjustment" going on for the '11s.

What kind of haggling can you do on a car that is in high demand? Can you haggle much when ordering a car? I have always bought off the lot! The thought of offering sticker price makes my stomach churn.

BTW, if a dealer offered me that for a car that looks like your Grabber Blue '10, I would turn on my heels and walk out. That thing is drop-dead gorgeous. I hope you decided to keep it.... right?

UPDATE:

It's right.

Ford dealership was hesitant to quote me a trade-in because delivery of the 2011 would be about 8 weeks...said that right now they would give me $21,500 for it

Test drove a Camaro SS and had my car appraised by the Chevy dealer offered me $22,000 for it.

Pretty freakin' amazing since I bought it May 2009 (14,000 miles ago) for $22,250.

I liked the Camaro..but I really want the 2011 'Stang so I'm going to talk to a couple more dealerships and see if one will lock in a teade-in price.
