First of all you will need to scuff the surface with a Scotch Brite pad so the new paint will adhere to it. Wipe the surface with a tack rag, primer and paint. If you are going to paint the plastic chrome bezels also, it will need to be removed before paint so I would recommend spraying with EZ Off oven cleaner and let it sit overnight. Wash it with soap and water the next day and most if not all of the chrome will be gone. After they are dry again use a tack rag to remove any dust or debris and repeat the paint and primer.

It is really easy to paint the vents black - and a lot cheaper than buying new ones. They pull out of the dash fairly easily, the "chrome" trim ring is held on by 4 clips (careful pulling back on them so you don't break them) - scuff the vent a little and spray away. I also painted the chrome trim rings - top down, bright sun behind makes for a lot of glare off those.

I need to update the pictures, I fixed the smudge that was on one of the vents (don't touch them and try to install until you know it is dry)

(I also changed to white face gauges)

JimC, I think the black fins look alot better on our silver dashes. A nice contrast. Yours look good.

Instead of removing the trim ring and risking breaking the clips, its much easier to remove the fins and side pieces.

CJPonyParts sells all sorts of different vents. I can't find the black ones, I'll have to get the part number from their magazine

Except if you are going to put the Roush vent pods in for the center gauges like I did, then you have to pull the trim rings off and swap them over to the Roush pod.
