Hi Cummins Cowboy,

The axle weights I'm speaking of can be located on the rear axle at the point where the shocks attach to the axle. Each side at each of these bases. They're a piece of cake to remove as each is held on with a single bolt. They are easily seen as cast, rusted looking blocks. You'll immediately see them when you crawl under there and look at the shock attachment points. I wish I had a pic of this, but honestly they are readily seen once you get under there.

I weighed each part(s) as I took them off using a standard bathroom digital scale so there's prolly a couple lbs wiggle room each way, but for simplicity's sake I'm just stating the average after weighing each 3 times; good enough for me. Here's my diet breakdown:

Rear-
Spare Tire 30lbs
Spare Tire Jack, TBar, Trunk Floor Mat 10lbs
Axle Weights 10lbs
Total Rear Weight Savings 50lbs (replaced spare/jack/tbar with can of Fix-a-flat)

Front
Miscellaneous Engine Brackets (this'll be a future thread where I'll post pics of each bracket removed and why each removal does not have a negatively affect on its removal, but I ended up with a pile of metal bracketry) 5lbs
Interior Fire Wall/Inner Front Fender/Hood Sound Deadening 5lbs
Crank Pulley (swapped with ASP UDP) 5lbs
Battery and Battery Holder/Bolts 25lbs
K&N CAI 10lbs (vs stock intake box and assoc stuff)
Total Front Weight Savings 50lbs

My car, 2007 V6 Auto, stock weighed 3345lbs. With 100lbs removed, I'm now at 3245lbs. With me in it, the car weighs 3395lbs (just 50lbs over stock!).

Future mods will be 1) BMR K-member (20lbs savings) and A-Arms (14lbs) and 2) Steeda Rad Support (10lbs savings).

That'll put the car roughly just a fraction over 3200lbs. After that, it becomes MUCH more difficult to continue on my diet plan unless I wanna resort to extreme measures like torching the bottom of my car to get the sprayed on sound deading off.

But I can tell you that I notice 100lbs off my car in the way she handles, accelerates, stops, etc. Pretty amazing that it can make that much of a performance improvement. I think Carrol Shelby was once quoted saying something along the lines that reducing weight is one of the most efficient and well-worth mods for improving performance.

If only I'd seen this thread a few days ago. My battery crapped out on Monday and I put another Motorcraft in. I would have tracked that Deka down had I known.

Lol. I got a solid 4 years out of the original. Plus it was the cheapest battery available actually. My local parts store sold it $10 cheaper than Autozone sold their no-name battery. I wanted an Optima until I saw the price tag.

I think an aluminum driveshaft should be next.

What is the intended function of the axle weights and are there any negatives from removing them?

WeinerDog,

I've been driving around for a few months now with the axle weights removed. I cannot tell any difference, but then again I don't track the car either. >>>>But then again, why would Ford put a part on a car which only impacts track performance when the vast majority of people will never track their Mustang? If that's the case, I'd rather Ford have put that money instead to paint the rear axle. Orangy rust looks like crap.

>>>>All I can say as far as someone who has actually done this, is that driving my Mustang outta my garage into Morning LA traffic and daily LA driving, I do not notice ANY change in the performance of my vehicle.<<<<
