Twin Screw vs. Roots
#51
Wow, with 85% of the votes being for TS I was really hoping for some more facts to back this up. It almost seems as though the TS guys (whipple) just have a better advertising team. More power to them if that's the case, but I guess we will just need to wait for someone to do a true head to head comparison of the 2.3L TVS against the 2.3L TS with several pulley sizes on a vehicle. Then maybe we'll get some Dyno number to support these results.
Whipple stopped using Lysholm rotors years ago. They now manufacture their own design. The difference between a gen1 and gen2 Whipple is 2psi for the same pulley size.

Now, I have a serious beef with the terminology of describing screw lobes:
**TS for Twin Screw falsely makes you think both screw rotors have IDENTICAL lobes. This type of screw rotors should be called Male-Female Screw (ROFL!!!!)
**Likewise, TVS should should instead be called Identical Screw Rotors.

Back in October and November of 05", right after i had ordered my 06' premium package GT coupe, the Saleen series VI was the most efficient power for the psi. The Whipple was over a year away from standard release, and the Kenny Bell set up also was not releasing testing Data yet, and had no warranty info either.
So living in LA, it was a simple choice to go down to the Irvine Saleen plant and have my new car put on to their assembly line to have the SC and suspension put on. I had gotten an awesome price from Texas Hotrods on a end of the year(05) clearance on the Saleen SC and full suspension. At that time I was able to purchase the blower kit and suspension for 4800 bucks, and the install was about 1500 at the plant.
I'm still very happy about how it makes power at the various levels of PSI I've had it on with essentially stock exhaust. I'm currently making 460 rwhp on 10psi (custom tune) with very reasonable timing. More HP could be had with more aggressive timing, but having once had 510rwhp on the car with this blower, for the street, 460 or so is plenty with a 3570lb car. It still works great, and gets immediate power, great torque.
These days, buying now, I'd go with the Whipple..... Erik

As I mentioned, since I was @ higher boost and yielding about 510rwhp with about 485lb torque for a bit, it became clear that it was fun in 3rd and 4th gear because on the freeway or at about 55-60mph matching revs and downshifting into 3rd was awesome and the acceleration rate up to 100 was amazing, great fun. The down side was in 1st and 2nd gear the power was way too much, even the best feathering on fast starts would overwhelm the tires almost right away, and almost anyone can beat you off the line, because you can't really hook up until your in 3rd from a fast start. Too much for the street.
Since I had been on a stock 300HP, and then the Saleen standard set up @ 435HP(376rwhp) and then the JDM 8lb set up @ 480HP (417rwhp) which is a great set up, then the JDM/Saleen ramped timing E-car tune 14.5psi(2.875 pulley) for 580HP (507rwhp) for huge torque and power, then a stage 2 JDM 12psi set up for 545HP (474rwhp) and now finally for the first time I'm on a custom 10lb tune and set up with reasonable timing making about 530HP (460rwhp).
With my car coming in @ 3575lbs or so with near stock exhaust,, of all the power levels I've driven with on as a fun very fast street car I can honestly say that for the 05-09 MUstang GT's with a well fit out suspension and twin screw SC, that a tune producing between 440-460rwhp is the best over all power level to enjoy on the street, not being too weak in the upper gears, and not being too powerful and overwhelming in the lower gears.
These numbers on the 05's point clearly to having a 10psi set up, unless you have very open exhaust(loud) in which case an 8psi set up. Obviously to be in the 440-460rwhp range the tune must be high quality and done by a recognized reliable tuner, which from my experience so far means JDM mailed tunes.
I have had 2 previous attempts at a custom tune after being on the JDM tunes, and they have not been quality, because of either pulling lean or rich engine warnings, and or the tuner not hitting the cold start tables correctly, which is difficult for the 05's. I am currently having yet another custom tune written by someone with a great reputation that I should have gone to first, but didn't. Most shops are full of crap about being able to write Supercharged tunes for the 05-09's. Be very careful, and don't waist your money on hot air.
Jim Sr. @ JDM is a great master tuner, I wish I lived in NJ, otherwise, I will see how this next tune goes. Erik
