Default Tune and intake

How much of a difference does a 93 tune and a K&N make on the coyote?

I have seen claims at Brenspeed for up to 30+HP on a Tune and an additional 15 HP on a CAI... I'm not sure if the K&N you are referring to is strictly a drop in filter or their CAI, but skip either and get a decent CAI.

Good Luck and Happy New Year...

That all depends on the quality of the tune, a good tune, you could probably get 30hp, a crappy tune, and you could actually loose power.

You might want to check out a JLT intake and tuner package, you wouldn't have to worry about tracking down a custom tune for the K&N then.

A drop-in filter will provide you with no (measureable) gain.

If you are talking horsepower, the guys above summed it up pretty well. A decent tune can give you massive gains.

If you are talking feel..well, that is relative. I can tell you for me personally it was a massive change. In this cold weather, prior to putting in my tune, first gear was useless, while hitting second would cause a lot of tire smoke before finally catching.

With the tune in, sitting in third gear at 40MPH and then flooring the gas will cause the rear end to light up like I'm in first gear. Absolutely no traction at all. Gobs of torque everywhere. The tune really unleashes a crazy amount of power, much more than any tune I've ever done on my past cars (including an 08 GT).

I have seen with my own eyes the following.

Stock 5.0 MT and SCT canned tune 377rwhp. Same car with a custom tune 395. Nothing else but the tune. The same car made 367 stock but I wasn't there to see it.

The 93 custom tune will yield some but minor gain over an 87 custom tune. The point I'm trying to make is that even an 87 custom tune is a major RWHP gain over the stock 87 tune; coyote OR 4.6L. Research before you pull the trigger.

AM or Brenspeed for the better tunes. FRPP for lame tunes. The K&N CAI is not the best for a CAI & tune combo but you're talking very minor RWHP difference.

I'm not a fan of K&N on the mod motors as much as I was on the Fox's. I'd go JLT or Steeda CAI and a tune from a more reputable shop such as AM, Brenspeed, JDM or even Steeda themselves.

I went with the evolution performance tune, steeda CAI and magna flow cat back exhaust and couldn't be happier. RWHP gain is debateable because of all the variances with dynamometers but I can tell you without the tune I ran 13.1 - 13.2's and with the add on's I ran 12.3's.

Your power gains were from the CAI & tune only. There's no gains to be had with the axlebackes; at least not that you could distinguish between back-to-back before and after dyno pulls. Ford has been doing it right with free-flowing stock exhausts off the assembly lines.

Congrats on the time improvement. Others have also stated very impressive RWHP gains with just the CAI & tune on the 5.0.
