Default Bad to keep unmount and re-mounting tires?

Just wondering if it's good practice keep your winter/summer tires mounted on a totally different set of rims so you don't have to keep mounting and re-mounting them? Does it weaken the tires at all to keep doing that?

I usually have a set of really cheap wheels for the winter. The salt tends to ruin the finish on a nice set of wheels. I dont think it is damaging to the tire to be taken off a wheel and than put back on once a year.

I went on NewTakeOff and got a set of "base" 17" GT rims for like $330. So easy to just grab a jack and a wrench and change them out yourself in an hour in the fall and an hour in the spring. Also, keeps your summer wheels in better shape...avoids the potholes, etc...

i wouldn't think it can damage them. i would say its more of a hassel to keep remounting them. you can also check eBay or the classified section for a cheap set of stock wheels.

Dismounting and remounting can break the bead and weaken the sidewall of the tire over time as you have to literally stretch the tire out to fit over the lip of the wheel. you also run the risk of the shop tearing the bead surface of the tire and it having a leak the more they dismount/mount them.

+1 they can be damaged! I would buy a cheap set for the winter! In the long run it would be cheaper,no need to pay mounting and balancing twice a year!

Certainly saves money to have a second set of rims for the winter, and you're not exposing your rims to the chance that a tire tech with screw up and scratch them.

Plus you can change over to snows quickly if snow unexpectedly shows up in the forecast early in the season.

Different set IMO will pay off! Mounting/remounting will get expensive!
