Default Texas Motor Speedway Laps for Charity

Its about that time again where TMS is opening up the track for a few laps for a good cause. I didn't go last year but I have heard from multiple people that the pace car sometimes exceeds 100 mph..

Anyone interested?

Really thought about it until i heard there could be up to 15 cars on the track at the same time. Dont want my car out there with 15 knuckle heads in minivans (slight exaggeration) that dont know what they are doing. Especially at 100 mph. It is a good cause tho, just wish the would group cars by experience or something to keep it safer.

I am by far not an expert driver; there are guys just down my street who could out-drive me in a Geo Metro.

If it were just me on the track, I would totally open up the throttle to WOT on the straights just to see how well my car can do!

I think some of you may be missing the "Single file, no passing, speed set by pace car" part. Seems pretty safe, assuming people don't bring cars that are dropping parts.

I wonder just what speed the pace car is going to tote the queue at?

I lived down the road from the Texas Motor Speedway for a few years. I drove my 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 pick-up around the track for a few laps. I hit a 100mph and let me tell you....it is cool going around the turns with/in the banking. The vehicle feels as though it's sideways and if you stop you might fall off the track. What a sensation....I thought it was awesome and it's worth the experience. This event doesn't sound like racing but, a event / lap in your own car experience with rules. You shouldn't have to worry about other people....I'm assuming this from my experience.... I don't have this event info.

Almost ten years back you were able to take your STREET cars on the track....I forget what the events where called but, they usually held it a couple times a month. There was always someone smashing a Mustang or Impala SS or what ever you could think of into the wall because they had to much speed and not enough down force. Quite a spectacle!!

You will be far safer doing this than driving down the street for a cup of coffee. Think about it - there is a pace car, no passing, all the cars will be travelling the same direction, no cross streets or intersections. The organizers will undoubtably have some sort of minimum tech inspection, they don't want clunkers out there and they will be preaching safety.

I've driven Pocono raceway a couple times, hitting 150 on the straights (C5 Corvette) and entering Nascar turn 1 (14% bank) at 120. I could easily enter it at a higher speed but didn't have the gonads for it, there is amazing grip in the corners due to the banking. The G-forces press you down into the seat and forces on the steering wheel actually strain your arms after a few laps. It is an adrenaline rush, like the best roller coaster X10. The only thing I can think of thats better is flying a jet fighter.

If you are in any way an adrenaline junky you are missing out by not trying stuff like this. The car is made for it...let her run!
