Default Rear veiw mirror removal for future homelink isntall

So over the last week, I've been thinking about putting a few items I have around the house on ebay b/c they are just collecting dust.

One of those items was the Homelink rear view mirror I purchased from fordaccessories.com maybe around 2 years ago. I never got it on the car because the auto-glass shop said it would be difficult for them to take off the old mirror and not break the window, and even the ford dealership said that the plate glued to the window was a different size so my gentex mirror would not fit on it. I took their word for it as I had never had the guts to try removing the mirror myself.

Well I thought I would finally give it a try since the warm weather around here now is better than doing this in cold weather. I found a good description of how to take the old mirror off on another site.

I was able to get the mirror off with just a little bit of force, pulling towards the back of the car with the small screw driver I had. (needed a small one because the hole was to small for a normal screwdriver to get in.

Turns out that the dealership was wrong about the size of the plate. The Gentex hooks and the original mirrors hooks were the same distance apart (minus the prying i just did to pull it off).

I've attached a few pics. I'm not sure what the clip is for on the gentex mirror.

Has auto-dimming feature, has compass, has temp gauge, and most importantly to me, has homelink for up to 3 devices (garge door opener, etc)

Original mirror has none of that.

The little metal nubs that are glued onto the windshield are indeed quite difficult to remove without cracking the windshield, but a pair of vise grips and a heat gun can go a long way towards making that happen. Clamp the vise grips around the edges of the nub and point the heat gun (on low, don't melt the windshield!) at the nub while pushing the vise grips to the side to peel the nub off. Works every time. Sorta.
