Default Shifting Question; 2010 GT (3.73 Axle)

So this is my first post ever on this site and I need some help! I've been scoping out lots of mustang forums, and the people on this site seem the most helpful, knowledgeable and friendly...So here goes!

I've noticed a few posts about shifting around the 5000 rpm range.... I've looked at videos, and lots of them are in the 5K range, even going to red line. Obviously, some might just be showing off, but I'm worried. Personally, I have been shifting around 2.5-3.5K rpm... So yeah.

On the mph side, it typically works out to roughly:

1st gear: 0-10 mph
2nd gear: 10-25 mph
3rd gear: 25-35 mph
4th gear: 35+
5th gear: Cruising over 40

I have the 3.73 axle ratio, and this is my daily driver. No mods yet. Am I doing something wrong? Have I been taught wrong? Please give me some guidance! Thanks!

shifting at 5k is wayyyy to much for just casually driving up the street lol.... for just casual driving 2500 is a good shift point, and gradually increase from there as the throttle is applied.

For example if you are accelerating faster than usual but not WOT than shifting at 3500 - 4k might be good.

thats what I was thinking!! at 5K, id be blazing down the (highly congested LA) streets! haha, so does the 3.73 axle make any difference? Would the shifts be different for 3.31 or 3.55? Just curious now

That is about how I shift in my 06 GT.
Cruising around at 40 in 5th feels good, can watch the average mph slowly climb :P

5K RPM shifts are for racing.

Daily driving 2300-3000.

Hi dakine963!

Welcome to posting on the forum! The videos you looked at were most likely shifting for racing. The ideal shift patterns are on page 208 of the Owner's Guide:

1 - 2: 11 mph
2 - 3: 19 mph
3 - 4: 30 mph
4 - 5: 40 mph

Have fun driving!

Lower rpm shifts = more fuel mileage; higher rpm shifts = more fun!
