Would definately fix that myself. $600 is way too much, a dealer probably wouldn't charge that much.

It sounds more like they don't want to do the job itself so by pricing it so high, you will either do it yourself or go elsewhere.

I was quoted around $500 bucks to replace the upper and lower thermostats. I would suggest calling around and get quotes.

Im having a similar issue. but what happened to me is after I took off at the like I hit redline and shifted to 2nd.... then I noticed a ticking sound and then my car started smoking a stupid amount. I have no coolant and my entire engine bay was covered. the next day I filled the coolant res. with water and looked for leaks. I took my rad hoses off inspected them and there was no cracks or leaks. anyone please help

Your profile information says you have a 2005 GT and not the 4.0?

If you do have the 4.0, it isn't the hoses that are the problem. The thermostat housing is the issue.

Default Hot Mustang

I'd start with replacing the thermostat and cap. Chances are very good that will cure the problem.

Not on the 4.0. The housing itself usually splits and the entire housing has to be replaced. Very common thing on the 4.0, and 95% of the time that is the source of a coolant leak. Replacing the thermostat won't do it.

Ditto what Jimc stated. The t-stat housings on the 4.0 are chronic for cracking. I bought an aluminum housing for my wife's 4.0 even though she hasn't had an issue yet. And $600 is highway robbery.
