Its a freeze plug from what it looks like to me, and if its cold enough, It could bust.

Are you sure you didn't loose colant from the t-stat housing? They are made of plastic and are a chronic problem on the 4.0L V6; cracking and allowing coolant to leak.

I don't know if the Mustang 4.0 is the same as the Exploder 4.0, but my wife's Exploder had the bypass hose on the waterpump let go and looked like a similar pattern of antifreeze puke on the engine.

It split on the back side of the hose, and was tough to see.. feel around the hose and see if you can stick your finger in any cracks.. It's coming off the top of the waterpump...(on the Exploder anyway)..

That looks like either the plastic housing for the thermostat or that small hose that robs mentioned. It is pretty small. Look at a Haynes manual for water pump replacement to get an idea of the hose (it was a real pain to put back in place when I replaced the water pump last year)

No alternator in the way on the Exploder. My t-stat is leaking. Crap. Here you can see it better. Stick your finger in the hole, there should be something there.

I was working on an Xcharger install yesterday and I'm pretty sure that is the thermostat housing on your car. Looked like the same "plug" on the housing. I have a picture but need to download it yet.

So plan to replace the housing.

Okay, I finally downloaded the pictures. With the intake and everything off the car it is pretty easy to see.
