Default oem gear shift problem

I everyone and thanks in advance for any help. I have a customers mustang with an OEM auto gear shift assembly. He had spilled a coke on it. Im a detailer and took the shift **** off to be able to clean. The plastic boot was coming off it's track.

the problem is the spring loaded plastic spear that the button on the shifter depresses come out. I must have gotten it caught on my shirt or something. I can not get it to go back in for the life of me. It has two teeth at the bottom that fits in a certain way. I can push down but it needs to be turned so that the top is in the right direction to make the button work.

The gear shift works in both direction but can't get keys out.

Is there a way of getting the plastic spear back in and make this gear shift work again.

I am super stumped and super stressed since this isnt even my car

Please help!!!
