Default How much motor oil do you burn?

So I am only guestimating, because I didn't write down my miles for my last oil change, but has been 5 months and around 3000-4000 miles.

I used 5W-30 Castrol GTX full synthetic, it was only about 4 bucks on sale during christmas time. I bought a quart last week to add some to my motor and it was $10 :O

Anyway, so far I have added 1 quart in the past 3-4000 miles. My motor has 87k miles and I just read that it isnt abnormal for higher miled engines to burn oil. Some burn as much as 1 quart every 1000 miles

That being said, i'm switching to a 10-30 and possibly getting a "high mile" oil for slower oil consumption

I've owned over 12 vehicles, 5 of which had 200,000 + miles. Only 1 used enough oil that I had to add oil between oil changes. I currently have 2 vehicles (my Stang with 40k miles and my SUV with 70k miles) that get oil changes every 8k-10k miles and neither uses oil. The wifes 4.0L gets changed every 5k-6k and her's doesn't use oil either. She has 31k miles on hers.

Some engines just use oil. Many don't.

Less than a quarter of a quart between 5000 mile changes using Royal Purple 5w20 Syn. I'd say it drops less than 1/4 inch on the dipstick. I am right at 65,000 miles total.

Purchased 3weeks ago, driven 2000 miles almost all hwy driving, top speed reached
118 mph. Three fish tails, Three burnouts, all very fun! 28,332 original miles.

My '97 Cobra used to use a qt every 1000 miles and it only has 50k on it.
After adding a catch can to the PVC line, it no longer "uses" any oil. It turned out that it was sucking & burning the oil through the intake.

My 2000 v6 has 180,000 on it and my 05 gt has 130,000 + on it Run 0w30 in both and neither use enough oil to ever add any.
*and I only change it yearly*

My engine doesn't burn oil. I have the oil changed every six months, which is only about 1000 miles.

I don't know what good you would do by switching to 10W-30, and you could do some harm. The lower number (10) is roughly the weight of the oil when the engine is cold. You want the oil to circulate up into the engine as quickly as possible when you are starting a cold engine. Most engine wear occurs on start-up, so you want the lower number to be no higher than 5.
