Autotrader makes real live offers.

It's a 05 it's not worth what you think. 19K, not even close.

Tax trade is helpful, but mods are worthless to used car dealers... Take them OFF and sell them.

Expect to be offered 9-13K

How does the carfax look?

Maybe this will help... auction prices... expect a dealer to use this as a figure...

They will go with a low number... Just in case they do not retail they will offer about 1-2K below auction prices to leave room for profit if they need to dump it.

The most valuable mods I have are the cams and headers. They are a pain to take out but if I can't get a good deal from a dealer or sell privately, I can take a weekend and take them out.. I really don't want to get rid of this car though because I know that dropping down to a 4 or 6 cylinder is going to be a huge disappointment power-wise.

simple solution

keep it spend 2k on a cheap 4 banger

Trust me, I have tried. It sucks without a mustang. I sold my 99 a few years ago... It took 4 months until I bought another.

We just had our second child and I was considering getting rid of my car to be more practical..... Wife said HELL NO, you'd be whining like a baby all the time. That's your hobby, keep it...Per the wife...

Cheap car and keep it.

You're in GA, how about that heat today.

I stayed inside all day today! I knew it was hot and did my best to avoid it!

I would do that if I could afford an extra 2k and insurance. I'm a college kid and pretty broke right now.

Sorry Roush but I can't allow you to trade in your car, it is far too good looking and sounding.

On a semi-serious note, I'd give you that 8k for it that edmunds says its worth.

Have you tried talking to your parents? I have a son in school and would try to "help" him through. Although 2 g is a lot of $ for insurance. I would definatly want time to think it over.

Very solid point.

You're doing the right thing and thinking about the future. You can always get another mustang down the road. I had to wait until I was out on my own working to buy one.

Your best bet is stripping it down and selling parts.

I did the Autotrader thing and just got an offer for 14k from them. I am going to have to think about what I want to do for a while.

Go on Ebay and look for completed auctions in your area for cars like yours, that will give you and idea of true retail price. The dealer will offer you 3-4K less than those numbers but I'd hold out for 2K below retail.

Cars.com is a search engine I've used to look for a car for sale in the my area close to what I'm trading, that will show what dealers are asking for as their retail number, again expect 2-4K less as an offer from a dealer.

Just because they low ball you doesn't mean you can't counter offer. If they say no then walk away. I'd also try and sell it to Ford dealers, they have Mustang customers coming in and could swing someone into your car instead of a new V-6 for less money.
