2007-09 shelby gt500 vs 2013 5.0?

Another one of these threads huh? :P
Obviously everyone in this thread is biased. Some have GT500's, others 5.0's. If you are the few that have driven both, you have a true say, other than the rest of us that have looked on paper (or monitors) to see the numbers. If you aren't looking to modify it from the day you buy it and you want to keep it exactly how it is, obviously the GT500 wins 9/10 times because it screams and has more power. But if you want to modify it, the 5.0 wins hands down even with just the difference in price as stated before.

Maybe it's just California but a quick CL check and the cheapest I've seen is $37k ( http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/cto/3264828340.html ). I bought my car for $26k OTD for a bare 5.0 6MT. There's a lot you can do with $11k. What you're mostly buying with a GT500 is the Shelby name and while it is cool, I'd rather make my own for cheaper and it's a newer car.

IMO it's hands down. Not much comparison but I've driven my brothers '07 V6 and the current '12 GT I have and the suspension feels much improved. I'd love to drive a GT500 to feel the difference but I have not.

It's not just a name, it's bigger engine that is also forged, already supercharged, suspension and brake goodies, better transmission (IMO), plus some.. To each their own though.. I do like the new body a lot more

Don't let the sheep fool you, all that HP in the GT500 comes at a steep price, money and weight.

You pay an enormous premium for just marginal improvement in performance. With a few grand worth of parts a 2011 GT will out lap a 2011 GT 500.
From KBB without mileage:
2011 GT 500 is worth 44k
2011 GT is worth 28k
What you get for 16k?
4 seconds faster around a track and .02 seconds faster at the drag strip..
Your friend would be wise to buy a 2011 GT...

So for a couple grand more, you get a supercharged, forged motor and a better platform for building off of that is faster than a brand new, non-forged, non-supercharged, stock engine. If you're going to make comparisons, at the very least use the two cars the OP mentioned in the title of the post.

Funny, MotorTrend says a 2008 Ford Shelby GT500 is worth an average of $33,921, while a base 2013 Ford Mustang GT is worth $31,095.
