Default Tire replacement oppinions...

Sup guys,

Time to replece the skins on my 09 gt500. I still have the stock 18" rims and I'd like to go to a 295 or a 305 on the rear and stay with the 255 in the front. Since I live in Utah I need to stick some all seasons. Do you guys have any ideas that I might be able too consider? Thanks in advance.

I like the staggered look, with the wider tires on the rear. But, with the stock rims just a little more BULGE on the front and back, with the rear a little wider. Not sure you can get away with 295 or 305. Maybe 275 front and 285 on the rear. Too wide of a tire would not be safe.

The stock wheels are 9.5 inches wide. 285 is close if not the max width you can put on that narrow of a rim. 295 or 305 may be able to get onto the rim but the contact patch will not be much bigger than the 285 but there will be more of a bulge at the sidewall. I can't think of a 295 or 305 18 inch tire that won't change your overall diameter.

buy a beater to drive when it's cold and get some high performance summer tires. A 295 all season is going to spin just as easily as the stock size. I'll never go back to an all season tire on a high horsepower car.

Wider tires are more prone to hydroplaning, especially after they've worn. Narrower tires have more weigh concentrated in one spot, thus preventing water from getting under the tire and floating you like a boat.

If you're keeping the stock 18x9.5 rims, you're better off going back with the size tires that came on it.

Contrary to the myth of wide tires, narrower tires work better in snow. The foot print on the wide tires are shorter.

Due to the width of the wheels you will not be able to go wider that a 285 tire safely. Also majority of tire manufactures do not produce all season tires that wide. If you are happy with the factory tires, you could go back with the Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercars or possibly the Yokohama ADVAN Sport. If you had a way to run a solid Summer tire the Nitto NT 555 would be a good choice. Bridgestone, Yokohama, Michelin and a couple others all have options for the 295 tire.

285 is as wide as you can safely go on that stock rim. You could send the rims out to be widened.

I wouldn't do Yokahama Advan Sport unless you're into drifting, I had them and the traction was terrible, especially in cooler temps.
I'm currently running Continental Extreme Contact in the DW variety and they have great traction, I know they also make a DWS version, but I have no idea on how that performs.
