hurst shifter
#3
Dan, I had this same issue. I did a search on these forums and found guys that have used a gun lubricant to solve this. The product that was recommended and that I used is: Break Free. I bought the squeeze bottle of "Lubricant/Preservative".
Lift the console to access the top of the shifter. Get the boot out of the way so you can see the ball socket part of the shifter. Put some of the Break Free on that ball and work it in a bit by moving the shifter around. After that I just left a few extra drops on it so it could work in further as I drove.
Since doing this, my rattle, which was constant all the time, is 100% gone and has been for awhile. Obviously, make sure everything on the shifter is tight first, but I bet this is your fix. I didn't tighten anything on mine, just added the lubricant. Hope it works out for you.

Any penetrating oil around the pivot ball will fix it for awhile. Apparently they left just enough play between the pivot ball and "sleeve" that it sits in that it can bang up and down under throttle, causing the rattle. The oil will fill that small cavity and dampen the noise.
