Do yourself a favor. If you're going to get winter tires, get them on all four wheels. The car will be much safer to drive. Also, Michelin XIce (I think that's the name) are a little better than the Blizzaks.

OP - you don't use tire chains on a car. You want to look for tire cables. A little bit harder to find but they do exist. As far as winter tires, I switched to Blizzaks and have never looked back.

I don't drive the stang in the winter, but even in my Subaru, l try to keep the tank full if snow is in the forecast. Every bit of weight helps.

I agree with others, if studded ties are available, get a set on separate wheels and slip on when snow is anticipated.

Used to use much larger chains with V-bar reinforcement, but later my old job went with Class S chains, and toyed with the cables. The class S worked much better than cables, and I ran this set for 2-1/2 days in the big eastern snow of Dec 19-22, 2009 .... in three days I worked 46 hours and drove these for several hundred miles and still have them for emergency use if needed.

The cable chains I've used never lasted a full shift and the old V-bar reinforced chains held on so well that the chain would roll of spun and twist a side link loose and then you had a long chain with a hooked end flying around ..... seen some continue to drive and do thousands in damage, even ripping door handles off.

Go easy, don't spin them and keep speeds down, and when roads start getting just wet or dry, get them off fast.[/FONT]

Like some of the others here, I have a separate set of snow tires - Blizzaks. 225's on 17" rims. I have driven it over Eisenhower pass in whiteout conditions, and it had plenty of traction. I would never consider chains with my setup.

However, I assume the winters in Iowa are a lot milder than Colorado. A separate set may not make sense if you only have to use them a couple of times a year.

My experience with chains/cables is that you can't drive very fast on them 25-30 mph max. Any faster and the tires tend to throw the chains.
