Default Mandatory snow chains in Cali?

So I have heard that there are places here in Cali where they won't let you drive unless you have snow chains installed in the winter, has anyone heard of this? Are cables ok? and does anyone have any recommendations for decent, non destructive cables? I have stock height and tires still, and I would only put on the cables to get past the stupid areas, then take them off. I am not worried about driving in the winter, so I wouldn't normally get snow chains.
Thanks for the input.

I bought my first mustang in snowy Colorado, and was forced to use chains to get around their neighborhood. Mustangs arn't snow cars at all. But it can be done with caution and I just used generic cable chains.

Anywhere in the country where you have mountains and snowfall, you'll be required to run chains. For your locale, I'd contact the Dept of Transportation and confirm if cables will suffice. Folks here are knowledgeable but I'd go to the source.

When I lived in san diego I carried a set of cable chains in the trunk during winter. I was stopped a few times going into the mountains and the grape vine . Once to see if I had chains, once to make me put them on. I think they still tell u if you need to put them on. Most 4 wd do not need chains in CA.

Here's my Wife's car from a few years ago. It actually handled the snow really well.

I have lived in S. Cali for 26 years and never needed cables. If you are planning on going into the mountains during winter then you MAY need them but it really depends on how far up your going.

Years ago when I was stationed out in Komie-phor-knee-ah, If going into the mountains in the winter you were required to have chains in the vehicle and if it was snowing they'd have signs (and check points) up telling you chains were required to go beyond that point.

It doesn't appear that has changed and you don't need chains in the lower elevations.

Yes, chains are required in some areas when there is snow on the roads. The places I’m aware of are in the mountains. There are sections of I-80 between Sacramento & Tahoe where they will pull over cars/trucks to ensure they have chains on before continuing down the highway when its snowing. And I mean reeeallly snowing. Its announced on the local radio stations, traffic reports, road signs etc etc.
