Default What is this part? It's making funny sounds

I just noticed there is a "PSST!" sound coming from under my hood about once every 20 seconds or so. I checked it out and found it coming from this weird part.

This part will start spinning and come to a stop. When it stops it goes "PSST!" sound like there is a pressure valve in there.

Anyone know if this is normal or should I take it in to get looked at ASAP?

Under the hood of the '05 Mustang GT.

Thanks!

Hmmm..From that view it kinda looks like the air conditioning compresser ..With the pulley kickin on and off, kinda sounds like the air conditioning compresser ..Not very knowledgable on these compressers, if thats what it is, but I cant ever recall hearing one let off any pressure.

That is the noise of a Ford compressor kicking on and off. Had three previous fords to make the same noise.

Yup... the AC Compresser.

It has to equalize the pressure internally - air polution - it isn't allowed to build up excess pressure like the old units so you get a lot of hissing when it is running.

Just pull the plugs to it... you don't need AC anyway, just eats up horsepower!

There right. Mine makes the same noise.

I know now that its the compressor just doing its thing but what I'm wondering is if it supposed to be THAT LOUD??

On a quite road, radio off, and even with the windows up you can still here it inside the cockpit! A little annoying.

Geez - such sacrafices we have to put up with to ride in air conditioned comfort. Turn up the radio, or get a complete off-road exhaust system and you'll never hear it again [8D]

Just noticed this same thing myself. Seems to do it quite a bit, even more frequently than 20 seconds or so, especially when the fan is on low. So, nothing to be concerned about? Nothing to be done about it? I like just listening to the engine as well and find that noise really irritating.

Yep, when I first got my 06 I was worried and quickly concluded it was the AC.
