would it be a good idea to drain coolant to 50% for winters?

My concern would be localized hot spots in the block where there was air instead of water. This would lead to unequal, non-uniform expansion rates in different parts of the engine. A recipe for a blown head gasket or cracked block in my book.

Buy a block heater and plug it in.

I figure with temps being below 0 most days the car wouldn't overheat and it would warm up faster and maybe run better?
You realize that the first thing you check when the car doesn't heat up is ------- low coolant. If you don't have enough coolant in the system then it can't circulate to the heater core and you don't get any heat in the cabin.

So no, it won't heat up faster on a cold day, and your engine will simply overheat due to the air pockets.

If you do this, be sure to drain your oil 50% and replace that 50% with the coolant that you removed from the cooling system, all will be even and warm up super fast.

If you do this I am NOT liable for how much damage you cause to your car...

HAHAHA OH man I forgot all about that guy, I remember reading that for the first time and seriously cried I was laughing so hard!

as for OP do not lower your coolant 50% as it's been stated when you take your car to a shop and say you're having heating issues first thing checked is for low coolant, not to mention as stated except your engine to run much hotter then normal.

I would suggest let it run for a few minutes before you go anywhere.. I'm in crapshack winter capital of the freaking world aka Canada and even when it's -30 5min of running and it's cranking heat out.. if you don't wanna run out in the cold to fire it up then I would suggest remote start.
