rule #1 of manual transmission cars, you don't hammer on them until the engine, transmission, clutch, tires and brakes are up to standard operating temps.

This is probably result of hammering on it with a ice cold clutch.

I believe it happened shifting from 2nd to 3rd, but not slamming gears. The car owner is not a young throttle junkie, just an older fellow like me (I worked at a Ford dealer on new Mustang IIs in the 70s).

So the instant heat change or temperature change to the clutch causes it to expand too fast and it explodes?

I would expect it to be able to take a good amount of abuse without doing that, so i hope it gets repaired under warranty

i do agree with letting cars warm up before pushing them hard though

Flywheel looks to be all still together, ring gear is intact .... looks like just the pressure plate failed in part, though not completely as biggest part of it is still in there.
Could easily have been a flaw in there from before machining. If he was "abusing" it when it come apart I'ld expect worse.

That's far and away better than if that flywheel had let go.

I've seen a flywheel let go, it'll take the pressure plate and housing with it and clean the firewall off and open up all kinds of gaps at rear of hood .... if you are lucky.

I thought a Shelby would be more durable than that. Seems like an abnormal failure to me.

based on what? you have no idea what this person was doing to his/her car. it's a car with 660+ horsepower. If you're constantly dumping the clutch in a car like this, something's going to break. like the idiots who bought Raptors and ran them down trails at 100 mph and donkey-kicked them on obstacles. Then complained they had a bent frame. These things aren't indestructible. If you try to destroy them, you'll probably succeed.

You're right. I don't know. But here you are assuming they did something outrageous. What a genius. LOL

So let's hear it OP, what did they do?

Edit: I'll take back my stupid comments. It's probably more likely he was abusing the car.
