Default CAI issues

Just installed a Roush CAI on my 05 V6 and i keep getting the wrench symbol and a check engine light. Car drives fine for a few minutes then it feels like its going to stall and the wrench pops up and it drives different after that. Do I need a tune? I followed the instructions exactly and disconnected the ground cable from the battery as instructed before install. This is my first mod to my car and I am new to all the tuning aspects. I use regular cheap gas and its been very cold in PA recently. Please help any advice is appreciated.

Yes you need a tune for the CAI. You are running lean and the computer is shutting the engine down to protect it

Shouldn't need a tune for that CAI. I put the exact same one in mine. Did you hook up the MAF sensor or damage it? That seems more the problem

Yeah, you shouldn't need a tune for that intake. It's not even required on the new 5.0. Like mentioned earlier, your MAF could've gotten damaged or even dirty. They can be very sensitive when exposed to the elements. I'd start there first. Or just go back to stock first and see if the problem clears up. I see you live in Pa, too....maybe moisture got in there.

Even a no-tune-required CAI can throw a code and extreme weather conditions can increase those chances. Regardless, A no-tune-required CAI gains little to no power gain; perhaps 3-4 RWHP on your 4.0. A good custom tune with a tune-required CAI yields roughly 15-20 RWHP on that V6.

Go over your install again and make sure you have no air leaks. Any unmetered air entering your motor is a bad thing. Get some maf cleaner spray and clean the maf. Dont use anything but maf cleaner to clean it to. Dont touch the sensor part of it...its very fragile. You should be able to figure it out...has got to be something simple.

Ok so I went back to stock setup and I am still getting check engine light with the wrench emblem. I have not tried cleaning the MAF sensor yet but that will be my next step before i start possibly replacing certain components. Also I noticed the PCV valve was loose when it was installed on the CAI and wasnt getting a good seal. I have been told this is a vacume hose so I wonder if that could be the issue? Any help is appreciated thanks
