do you have to replace the whole gauge cluster or can you buy an individual stepper motor for the gauge thats not working properly?

do parts stores like autozone sell them? what exactly are they called?

is it possible to get an aftermarket one that is more hardy then the faulty oem ones?

lets make this quick and simple. go to ebay. find someone selling the little stepper motors. the code on them should start with an X I think. buy 4 or 6 six depending on ur cluster and take the old ones off and put the news ones on. everything will work fine.

i rather have a shop do it, so if i just got the motors off ebay, they should know what a stepper motor is and be able to open the dash and replace them?

Don't bother going to a shop to have stepper motors replaced. The labor will be too costly and most mechanics shops are not good electrical shops. Instead, go to ebay or search online for a rebuilt gauge cluster that uses upgraded stepper motors and just replace the gauge assembly yourself.

Its not too difficult, but if you are really not comfortable doing it, then I would take it to an electronics repair place before I took it to a car shop. You can easily take the cluster out and bring it to an electronics repair place to have them re-solder the motors on the circuit board. Car shops normally do not do much work on circuit boards, they just replace the entire part.

I replace all of the motors in mine myself. I wouldn't recommend it unless you have experience soldering, but if you do, then it is easily do-able.

Yeah, I forgot, there are shops that specialize in automotive electric. It would be a good alternative and they may even have upgraded stepper motors in stock to replace the bad ones on your cluster if you just bring them the cluster.

Does anyone know if the replacement stepper motors should be x27.589 or X25.589 for a 05 v6? i have the 4 gauge dash if that matters.

X25.589 There is a lot of good info in the above posts, set up a neat work area, follow the instructions on the post, and give it a try, a new cluster is a little more than a couple hundred bucks if you really screw up, which is most likely not much more than hiring it done. Just take care not to scratch the faceplate, use light cardboard(like a matchbook) to protect faceplate while prying up the needles.
