Default What is going on with my wheel?

Hey guys,

I have noticed the last two times I have washed my car that some kind of plastic is peeling off one of the rims. I can easily push my finger over it and get it to flake off. Washing the car makes it easier as water will seep under whatever it is.

Here are some photos:

The wheels have a clear coat on them. It looks as if someone used the old style weights when they balanced your wheels. Once the weight is pounded on and later removed, the clear coat is damaged and allows just what you said; water and dirt gets underneath and simply promotes more peeling.

Exactly, I had this problem on my old mustang wheels (not as bad as yours) but you could see the wheel oxidizing under the clear coat.

whats the best way to get the rest off? And do I need to worry about protecting the wheel after it comes off?

Without the coating, the aluminum (or whatever alloy that is) will oxidize. You probably can have it re-coated but it might simply be easier to find a used wheel.

Clean these wheels and use as winter set. Buy new ones for spring/summer.

I plan to do just that. I am buying a set of chrome wheels in the very near future. I hoping some pretty amazing deals come up for memorial day.

I just need to find a set of winter tires. I don't want to spend another 600 on new winter tires right now.
