Chains and "lifetime alignments" may be good enough for some or even many people.

Just don't ever expect them to set your alignment to any custom specs or even tweak the settings to better suit your driving (based on either your tire wear, local road conditions, or through dialog across the service counter). Keep this in mind if your car is lowered or if you have any intention of ever lowering it, never mind that some shops don't care to work on lowered cars to begin with.

This is true, and I appreciate the insight...good thing the Service Manager at the Firestone I go to tracks his modified S2000 so the option of a custom spec'd alignment is available!!!

Just make sure you get a good shop with a good mechanic with references. I've gotten cars back from alignment with the steering wheel off center, the caster set backwards, nothing done, dented hubcaps. etc. My '99 GT had 183k miles on it when I sold it and I never got it aligned, but the roads here are good and I never hit anything. Luckily.
