Default 08 v6 mustang won't start

Hello,

Need some help / advice before I get the car towed to a mechanic. I have a 2008 v6 mustang.

Was driving down the highway when it stalled and powered off and got these errors:

fuel level low
dte odo data err

-check charging system

open the hoop, do not see anything out of the ordinary, check battery connections, lose cables, all look good.

I get in and about 5 mins. later, turn it on and it starts right up, no issues, proceed to drive home, about 20 mins into my drive, the SAME thing happens. I pull into a parking lot. Check for any lose cables, and nothing. This time it doesn't turn on at all.

My lights, radio turn on. I turn the key and not even a noise. I disconnect the battery for about an hour, same thing, lights and radio turn on, turn the key, and nothing. The motor won't turn. So I'm thinking alternator since I just replaced my battery 5 months ago.

I take the alternator off, get a new one, and replace it. hook up some jumper cables, and SAME thing. Thinking it's the battery, I get it checked, they say it's fully charged.

I did searches all morning and get different answers.

I see one solution that could be fuse #19 in the sjb.

Another one solution I saw was a $17 diode (fuse box slot #53)

3rd solution I saw, was to check for a loose ground wire, where can i check this one?

i want to explore all my options before getting it towed.

please let me know....

Did you check anything you mentioned finding online? Use a volt meter to see the battery condition....with everything off and again as you turn the key. When turning the key, the voltage level should drop. Battery voltage should be 12+ normal and no less than about 11 volts to start the car.

Hello AzPete, yes, took the battery in and it showed over 12+. The battery was fully charged and it maintained 12+. Showed me the output standing there.

I replaced the #19 fuse from the sfb. Still didn't start, I turn the ignition and makes the "clicking" sound. I checked all the fuses, and "resit-ted" all the relays and nothing.

I checked for any "loose" ground cables and nothing.

I went to the auto parts store to buy the diode, but they don't carry it, I have to get that from the dealer, ran out of time.

You can swap the diode with another of the same size from the box. When you turn the key to the start position, do the lights dim at all. That would indicate a load being applied to the starter and it not functioning. You may have a bad starter.... The click you hear may be the starter solenoid but that could still be bad as another possibility.

Hi jamesdal1,
I have a similar problem with a 2007, V6. Been scratching my head for while now, but also the fact that comes and goes doesn't help troubleshooting it. Did you get it fixed? If yes can you please share the solution?

Thanks

Welp, looks like its fixed.

I went back and cleaned all the grounds to bare metal and jiggled relays in the engine compartment and its fixed. I'm thinking its was a faulty relay to the PCM.

Make sure you charge your battery on a charger and not with the alternator. I learned the hard way. Alts aren't designed to recharge a battery, but rather keep it charged.

Sounds like it's charged all the way already. Have it load tested if you haven't. And good job cleaning the connections.
