stock tires expiring, first time shopper help
#11
What I usually do when shopping for tires is to first go to Discount Tire and enter my car to get this...
Original Equipment Size
Take note of the original size, then click the "View Optional/Plus Tire Sizes" link to get this...
Plus Sizes
Using a new tab in your browser, go to http://1010tires.com/Tools/Tire-Size-Calculator (or see example below)
Enter your stock size, then enter some sizes from the Plus Sizes on the Discount Tire page. This will show you the O.D. of the stock tire compared to the O.D. of the others you've chosen, you want a tire close to the original O.D. If the O.D. is larger or smaller than original, you'll need a tuner for setting the tire size to correct the speedo.
I chose a couple to compare for example...
http://1010tires.com/Tools/Tire-Size...0R18/255-45R18
It will also show the Rim Width Range. Narrow rims will improve ride quality at the expense of handling, Wide rims will improve handling at the expense of ride quality, Choosing a rim width at the middle of the range will give a balance between ride quality and handling.
Once you get that worked out, read some reviews and make a choice.

I dont think oem tires are going make it over 20k. Im planning to get new ones soon but so many choices and no tire buying exprience. Long story short, im looking for all season/summer tires thats quite, long lasting, sticks well and reasonable pricing. Its a street/fun car, it will not likely to see track anytime soon. Any suggestions?
That being said, I've had pretty good luck with Nitto 555 summer tires. They have seemed to outlast other tires I've tried (Pirelli Summer, BFG KDW as well as the OEM BFG KDWS tires).
I've picked up most of my tires from Discount. What they don't have (Nitto) they can special order at really good prices.

I've had Cooper RS3 A/S on my 05 GT for 4 months and so far I've been very impressed with them. Good traction and very quiet so far for a decent price. Haven't had a wet weather spin yet as I prefer to let my truck get dirty.

i still cant decide if i should go with 245 or stock 235. Besides speedometer off 1 mile or 2, will this tiny increase in width reallly noticeable in traction or performance? Also 245 is about 2% larger than stock but still 3% within limit of destorying my brakes. Is it worth it?

I need to get new tires for my '13 GT, as well. I'm picking up, from tire rack, general G-max As-03's(I think that's the full name) they are $123/tire for the 235/50/zr18's. I had them on my '09 caliber SRT4, replacing the summer only F1 supercars. The G-max, although all season, performed just as good as the F1's, but with a 40k mile warranty. Worth checking out. They grip well, too. My caliber SRT used to spin the tires all the way to 60mph from a 40 roll with the F1's. Way less wheel spin with the generals.

Tires
The Tire Rack web site has a wealth of information. They also have a fantastic selection as well as pretty good prices.
I myself am a big fan of Michelin tires. My wife's '08 Miata GT and my '06 Mustang GT are running Michelin Pilot Super Sports. These are summer only tires, but we have dedicated winter tires for the cold months. I think the Pilot SS is the best tire I have ever driven on.
Michelin also makes a very good A/S tire , the A/S3. Michelins aren't cheap, but I firmly believe they are worth every penny.

nitto invo. I just put some on with 285/35/19 rear and 255/40/19 front. They're awesome, and they look great too. get them on discounttire on ebay, its the cheapest and most reliable place to get tires. They're cheaper than the original pirellis that come with the car; imo, i think they grip harder. Super sticky. I attempted getting the back end out today, and it wouldn't go; just shows you how grippy they are. They're a great bang for buck tire.
