Says who? Owners manuals are available for free all over the internet.

On this forum I did a search for "What octane" and it returned 494 threads on the topic. There's thousands of such threads across the internet about what fuel / octane to use.

You can use 87 octane in the 2011+ Mustang GTs. I use 87 octane everyday. You lose BHP, you only get around 400-405BHP on 87 octane, but if you go to 91 octane, you get the full 412 advertised BHP.

The way it works is in Ford's Copperhead PCM. The PCM reads from the knock sensors on the Coyote block and switches to a less spark advanced firing table (or set of tables). If you go to a higher octane, the PCM senses no knock and switches to a higher advanced spark firing table (or set of tables).

NOTE: The stock Copperhead PCM tuning tables can only go up to 91 octane max. If you find 93 octane, you only get 412BHP from the 91 octane tune tables.
The only way to take advantage of 93 octane or higher rated fuels is to order a tune from BAMA, Brenspeed, Steeda, etc.

Here's your answer (Jim gave a good explanation behind the numbers):

Horsepower
412 hp @ 6,500 rpm, 91 octane
402 hp @ 6,500 rpm, 87 octane
Torque
390 lb-ft @ 4,250 rpm, 91 octane
377 lb-ft @ 4,250 rpm, 87 octane

It was kinda the same way my tuner dynotuned my 5.3 Colorado. It would run stronger on 91+ and run fine on 87.

I run premium fuel in mine. If you read the OM it says 87 will work fine. However in my "quick reference guide" that came with the car, it specifically states that you should run premium fuel in the V8.

this has been beaten to death. if you want rated power from your engine, run premium. you won't harm your car at all running regular.

Yes, regular is fine just try to use gas from a top tier gas station (toptiergas.com). I usually use costco regular which is on the top tier list but I notice slightly smoother response with shell regular. I don't know if shell puts better detergents in their gas or something but I personally notice a slightly better feel. I have a costco membership so that's where I tend to go the majority of the time.
