Default Are the clunky noises normal?

I've got a 2014 GT with the MT82. The car seems to make lots of clunking noises with engaging/disengaging the clutch, or shifting gears at low speeds (1st to 2nd or 2nd to 1st). It sounds a lot like linkage noises. Is this normal?

if it's the "clunking" I'm thinking of, it's "normal." When you have the clutch disengaged, the driveshaft is unloaded, so you're hearing the backlash of the rear axle gearset. I've heard that on every S197 manual trans Mustang I've driven.

I have the same thing in mine, when I shift from 1st to 2nd. I have only noticed it when its cold outside. It seems to go away once the car has been driven for about 20 min. Yes the backlash on the rear axle is annoying, especially while cruising through a residential area in 2nd and trying to keep it at 15-20 MPH. I always feel like the rear end is going to fall off.

Have any of you tried a one piece aluminum conversion shaft? We add a lite weight foam dampener inside of our Mustang shafts to keep the transfer of gear noise to a minimum.

The ADS5000 is a direct bolt on replacement for your factory two piece Driveshaft. There is no need to change your pinion flange or add addaptors, Our shaft offers a proprietary aluminum flange that bolts directly to your stock pinion flange. It is available for your V-6 or V-8 car. Want to trim rotating weight? You can save 22Lbs over your stock shaft while adding strength at the same time!

Sounds like a good upgrade. How much do DS usually cost?

Clunks and noises are pretty normal from any mustang that I have ever driven. Mine is especially clunky when cold.

FWIW, A DS won't eliminate gear backlash or slop in the transmission so it may not make any difference in the noises that you are hearing.

Those shafts sell for $750.00 but if you mention this add we will give you 10% off through the month of February

Hello GLOCKer,

These guys have great information here, but I do recommend you get it checked out at your Ford Dealer to make sure there’s nothing else going on. Let me know what they say.
