Airbag Recall
#201
I think a miracle just happened but I'll hold until I actually get them replaced.
I called the dealer and asked about the recall, the girl said I had to take it into the shop for assessment. I told her no, there's a recall, you have nothing to "assess", just comply with the recall and get me my airbags, then I'll take the car into your shop. (It has never been to the dealer since I bought it).
After a lengthy argument I hung up and later she called me back to tell me I was right and the order had been placed for my airbags. Let's hope this time they actually replace them.

I'm a new member, and just got a second letter from Ford about the recall for the driver's side inflator. I stopped at the dealer and they took down my information, claiming they'll call me when the parts arrive.
After the first letter was received, I wanted to disable the airbags till they were fixed, so I referred to the service manual CD and found the fuse (RCM fuse 31A) that should've disabled the airbags. I followed the "Depower Airbags" and thought leaving the fuse out would be enough. Instead it slowly depleted the reconnected battery.
After recharging the battery, I went back to the service manual CD and found that the crash sensor trigger switch for the airbags is bolted to the back of the radiator support just under the plastic shrouding in the center of the car. With the battery disconnected for 5 minutes, I unplugged & unbolted the crash sensor and threw it and it's bolt into the glovebox. the end of the open connector was taped over, and the shroud reinstalled and battery reconnected. Now the airbag warning light is always on and I'm pleased my rolling grenade won't go off.
Thanks for a great forum.

that is correct, they cannot go off randomly. what happens is.......the propellant in the inflator reacts to humidity over time and causes a faster burn when deployed during an actual accident. this faster burn causes the pressure in the inflator module to exceed its capability and the steel case fractures and can be turned into shrapnel. so you have to actually get into an accident where the airbags are deployed by the force

I had mine done in December, but just received a letter saying parts are in and to call to schedule. I got out my invoice and it is posted on the invoice that the recall number is the same as on the invoice....hmm
