The shift kit is a preference (not required). VBX does a good job of updating the valve body's to fix the most common issues. You wouldn't use half the kit because some of it duplicates what VBX already did.

if you plan on tackling the job yourself, here are my observations. It's not a comprehensive write up but it will give you a heads up on what to expect. Sorry, no pics. I did this a couple weeks after I actually did the job.
