Default Advice on my first Mustang purchase, 2010/2011?

Hey guys. I'm saving up to buy a Mustang (coupe) sometime next year. I'm looking at the 2010 to 2011 models specifically.

Now I do know that the 2010 comes with 210/315 and the 2011 is 305/412 in terms of HP for the base/GT models respectively.

Ideally, I'd like to get the fastest car possible for my price range. I PLAN on saving up $8,000, but if I can stomach it, I might be able to save up more and spend the extra needed to get a better car if it's not too much more. I have seen some base model 2010 V6's for $7-8K on Craigslist, and the auction (Manheim/Adesa).

I have a few requirements:

must be Grabber Blue
must be coupe (no convertible)
must have decent mileage (nothing higher than 150K)

as well, preferably (but not required):
premium model
manual

So my questions are as follows:

1) What kind of prices am I looking at for 2010-2011 base/GT for 80-150K miles? I'd LOVE to get the 5.0 Coyote, but I'm not sure how much I should expect to pay for one of those. Note that I plan on buying the car from an auction.

2) What exactly does the premium package add? Is it worth it?

3) I plan on doing some mods (intake, exhaust, tune, cosmetic etc.). Is the 2010 V6 model a joke? What about the 2011 V6? I'd like to add a Flowmaster or Borla axle-back for the sound as well.

4) How much better is the 2011 V6 compared to the 2010 V6? I know there's extra power, but what else? Should I even consider a 2010?

5) Is insurance affected by base/GT or year model? What should I be expecting? (22M)

6) What are some other things I should be looking out for?

Thank you in advance guys.

The reason he is saying go to the 2011 is that the 2010 had an updated look, but still had the old 4.6 V8. In 2011 you get upgraded interior and exterior as well as the 5.0 V8

Yes, I'm aware of this. I wrote a long post with several questions, and received a bland single sentence reply. I'm looking to get my questions answered, not "get x".

The 2010 V6 is a 4.0 liter single overhead cam. I have one in my 03 Explorer. While it is great for towing, I would not want it in a Mustang. It is technologically inferior to the 2011 V6 in every respect. My 07 Mustang GT has the 4.6 V8, which at the time was considered a decent engine with 300hp/320lbft of torque. The 2011 3.7 V6 has 305 hp and (I think) 280lbft of torque. It is a decent engine.

The premium package is worth it. You get the leather seats and the leather wrapped steering wheel. The deluxe came with cloth seats which are not very good, they didn't look like they would hold up well to me. When I went looking back in 07, I was considering a V6 deluxe. Thankfully, I went with the GT. I am sure another person can give you some more info.

So I have a few questions, what are you wanting out of this car? Are insurance rates a factor, gas mileage? Will this be your first RWD car?

I've owned a 4.0 V6 (2005) which is what is equipped in the 2010 V6. You're by far going to get your best deal on a 2010. Basically, people who bought 2010 Mustangs got screwed on resale, so you can pick up a nice 2010 4.0 in my area for $10,000 and below. It may have the slower motor, but it's also bullet proof. However, the T5 (manual transmission that came with the 2005-2010 V6s) is rough. So keep that in mind.

As for the GT, I've never owned a 4.6 3v (2010 GT motor), but I've never heard that it's anything, but dependable. Also the TR3650 that came with the 4.6 I swapped into my V6 and it's fantastic. That transmission is a blast, nice crisp and reliable. If you could find a 2010 GT it would definitely be worth a look, as would a 4.0 V6 (but if I were you if you can find a good lower mileage 2011 V6 I'd consider it heavily).

I've also owned a 2014 5.0 California Special. Something to keep in mind, the 5.0 is a powerful car. It sounds fantastic and it's fun to drive, but you need to think about how you like to drive a car. Do you like to drive a slower car hard and push its limits? Or do you like driving a fast car slow and rarely getting to really open it up? Basically what I found is that I wasn't a fan of having a monster that I rarely got the opportunity to flog on without getting slapped with a ticket (it also got incredibly bad gas mileage and had high insurance. I was 22F when I owned it).

Now premium vs base, I would base that on how good of a deal you got. If you're handy at all, you can put leathers on a base car. It's a pain in the ***, but completely do-able. My 2005 has 2010 leather seat skins and they're wonderful. If you're willing to deal with some sore fingertips, don't pass up a base just because it has cloth, that can be changed if you're willing. You can also swap steering wheels for a newer GT500 steering wheel or Boss steering wheel fairly easily. There are plenty of write ups on it.

Keep in mind, if you do buy a premium, don't let them try to up the price because it has a Shaker 500. Just know it's very likely that those speakers that came stock (and are a nice stock system) are most likely blown or will blow soon and need to be replaced anyway.

Then a 2010 V6 or 2011 V6, are they worth modding or are they a joke? Yes they're worth modding and no they aren't a joke. They're still Mustangs. You're always going to have those ******** that look down on you for owning a V6. If you care what people think of your car (and that is a serious question) then try to get a V8, even a 2010, but be aware that there are people that are going to look down on a 2010 GT, just because it's a 2010 and doesn't have the 5.0.

Basically it comes down to, what's important to you, your budget (including insurance), if you can live without leather (I had cloth seats in the '05 for years and they stood up extremely well), do you need to have a V8 to be happy? Those are questions you can really only answer for yourself by going for test drives and thinking about what you really want.

My buddy has a 2011 5.0 with the brembro package. That car is really nice and runs hard. The 5.0 is a great motor so like others gave said......2011 and up.

- All depends on the region you are in and the demand. Prices are what the market will bear.

2011 is the new 3.7 which already has way more power than the stock 2010 which is a 4.0L. 300HP (3.7) vs 240HP (4.0)

4) How much better is the 2011 V6 compared to the 2010 V6? I know there's extra power, but what else? Should I even consider a 2010? 4.0 was not originally designed for the mustang, it's a truck motor first and foremost. the 3.7L will respond better to mods because it has a better base to begin with.

5) Is insurance affected by base/GT or year model? What should I be expecting? (22M) Absolutely. Only your insurance company can give you details/quote you what to expect. Way too many factors to consider.

6) What are some other things I should be looking out for? - Early 5.0L engines had issues with burning out the #8 cylinder due to a tune or cooling issues (don't recall exactly). Manuals in both V6 and 5.0L had some shifting issues too from synchros getting messed up. Can't help with any other info as I don't own/work on either.

Thank you in advance guys.
See above.

I would go with 2011 if you can swing it.

Updated body style. More power, more quiet interior, overall much better car.
