So today I saw the production version of the new Camaro. It had an actual VIN # (000334) so I imagine this is what they're going to look like.
First thing- When I first saw this one from the rear I assumed it was the new Challenger, as it is in almost the exact same orange color as the SRT8 Dodge we've seen in all the magazines. You'd think they could use original colors! I also am not a big fan of chrome on a modern car. But they have chrome strips around those taillights.
And in case you think the exhaust is wide, it isn't! They are false wide, almost like fart cans. The actual pipes aren't that wide:
Next thing, though it is good looking, the design is making it not as user friendly as the Mustang. The hood angle is more extreme then the S197's and the windows are very short. This makes the view out very limited and awkward. The Camaro is going to be difficult to drive in the city! It will be hard to see the stop lights!
Plus, with the sunroof, there wasn't much headroom. With my seat as far back and as lowered as was comfortable my hair was brushing the roof.
The doors have a big painted, plastic inset in the door.Looking for lots of scratches in that in no time.
Even the steering wheel is weird and has a sharp edge around it. WTF? Gauges are kinda juvenile looking:
The trunk seems to be able to hold as much as the Mustang but for some reason the access to the trunk is way too small! Why?
The front end is impressive:
But it will be just too hard for me to overlook the shortcomings of this Camaro. So it will be off my list of next cars to own. I hope I'm wrong, as I'd like to see the muscle car wars heat up, but I don't think they'll sell too many Camaros.
I did happen to finally see a 2010Mustang in Grabber Blue today (with Michigan plates) and they look great! What a treat for the eyes that color is after driving in traffic with a bunch of boring, silver, white or black cars!

That is one ugly car from all angles except the front. The interior is......well, I almost threw up in my mouth...
I am contemplating getting the 2010Mustang GT and all I can say is it only has one not so pretty angle,,,and that is the back. The rest of the car is very nice inside and out

I like it... I think it's sweet lookin. The gauges are a disappointment though. I love the look of the headlights, those are my favorite part (the 6.2L V8 is nice too).
Man, nice pictures. But you sound EXTREMELY biased.
That's a damn good looking car. Sure it has short comings, but that big ass V8 more than makes up for them.
Sit in it and then drive it. It is gonna suck as a daily driver for sure. Way too many blindspots. There is a reason that Ford mustangs have always outsold the Camaro, Firebird and TransAm sales combined. The mustang is an all around much beter car for real life living. Mustang may be down on factory power, but it is still a much better car all around.

It all depends what you do with it and if I owned one it wouldnt look like that for long. It is no uglier than the new mustang but with a good chunk of change it could be a real beauty and a loft of fun on the track.

I always thought it sold more because it cost a good amount less.

Not necessarily. The last gen F-bods started at almost the same price as a 4.6 GT, AND had a good 80-90hp advantage AND a 6 speed gearbox. But they still didn't sell as well as the Mustang.
I really have tried to keep my fanboyism on the sidelines while scoping out the new Camaro........I really have. But I just see too many places where GM didn't give it all they had. I don't think it's ugly, but the car just has a weird look about it that doesn't appeal to me. It's like they walked an awkward line between modern and retro styling cues.....and the car's whole identity just suffered because of it. And the rearend makes the 2010Mustang's look like Jennifer Lopez's fine ass. I can definitely see where the corners were cut to keep costs down on the Camaro........the interior is a big one. Which baffles me considering how much everyone hyped up how good the Camaro's interior was gonna be compared to the competition. Guess GM pulled the rug on that one.
As I have said before, the car just seems like a more aggressively styled 2 door G8. And for the money, I'd rather HAVE a G8. The handling is just as good and at least the car has lots of room....on top of not feeling claustrophobic on the inside. Yea, the SS does have the LSX drivetrain.....which is a big plus (and the only plus needed for some ppl). But I don't want to deal with a heavy softrider when I'm spending this kinda money for next generation American muscle. Ppl complained that our S197's were too refined when they first came out. I don't know why they're giving the pass to the Camaro when it's ride is much more refined/quiet/civilized than ours ever could be. I just think they castrated the Camaro badge in the name of trying to build a contemporary 2+2 performance coupe. Which is funny, considering that's what they did with the GTO. But at least the GTO had a really awesome interior for the same price that one is paying for a new SS.
And yea, Ford could have done better with the 2010 also. But when you consider that the only shortcomings it really has against the Camaro is straight line acceleration (which mods can help with) and ride smoothness (which I'm not looking for in a ponycar anyways), I can't bring myself to say that Ford has really screwed the pooch either. Both companies could have done better. The 2010Mustang just happens to appeal to me more in all the ways that count. Others may feel differently, as we don't all judge by the same criteria. But if the new Mustang gets a hefty 5.0 drivetrain in the next couple of years........I think it will be the hands down winner in the latest ponycar war.
