Not to mention the challenger has 125hp over the mustang in the SRT and 70hp in the R/T. I think the R/T also weighs a bit less than the SRT.

Lets takes BMR4life's quoted weights...I am using them because I don't have the article yet.

Mustang weighs 3580lbs with 315hp=11.3lbs per hp

Challenger weighs 4140lbs with 376hp=11.0lbs per hp

Not that much difference.....

If that 5.0 comes out and weight stays low...
8.95lbs per hp

The Camaro estimated at 3800lbs with 426 = 8.92lbs per hp
The SRT8 with lets say the same weight with 425hp = 9.7lbs per hp

Based on these figures alone...weight makes a huge difference. Weight is the Mustangs secret weapon in keeping up in acceleration and in handling.

~3500lbs is pretty light all things considered.

The 5.0 isn't out yet and noone knows exactly how much power it has.

The C&D article that this thread is discussing deals with existing cars and powerplants.

As you can see who frickin cares if the Challenger is heavier. It has the power to make up for the difference.

Guess you get grumpy in the late hours of the night.

If you read my post I WAS referring to the cars in the article and I said "IF" the 5.0 comes out. Thanks for stating what has already been stated.

Yes and the Mustang has a weight advantage that can easily negate the extra power the Challenger needs just to stay in the game.

Riptide, give it a rest. We all know that the Challenger coming in last in every comparo done so far pisses you off....no need to keep reminding us. Yes, the Challenger has more power to make up for its weight. But all that weight KILLS its other performance dynamics (handling, braking, etc.). It truly is a 2 door Charger with slightly better acceleration characteristics IMO.

Weight is not the mustang's secret weapon.

Look at the figures you quoted. If you go on power to weight it is actually in the worst position of all 3.

I el oh el every time I hear an s197 GT owner critisize the challenger or the camaro for it's weight.

And yes I'm quite aware that if we're not talking straight line acceleration the challenger finishes dead last.

The figures were to show that the common quote "WOW 315HP!? the Mustang doesn't stand a chance." isn't as far a reach as one might think.

HP ratings are really more of a marketing wow....

600hp from the Cummins Diesel in a Peterbilt? Wow...that'll smoke everything.

I don't know about ya'll but I didn't buy the Mustang because it was the fastest thing on the road. I bought it to mod.

Common quote? Where are you reading that kind of quote in the first place? I'm having a hard time thinking of where I last heard someone say that.

A dodge board maybe?

/shrug

I've heard 10x more people on THIS forum bitch about the s197 and it's weight vs. the new edge by far than anything else.

I am talking about conversations I have with people throughout my typical day.

You see the cover of C&D and it reads "mustang wins" then you see its horsepower rating right on the cover and it makes one wonder how because 315 is much lower than 426 and 376.

I think the Challenger is a great looking car. I'd like to drive one badly. In fact...I didn't come into this thread to disrespect any of the 3 cars.

I was honestly just trying to state facts. Now here is the "IF".....

IF....Ford decides to put this "UNCONFIRMED 5.0 DOHC putting out an UNCONFIRMED 400hp." I think that Dodge, and Chevrolet will have to come up with another trick.

Hopefully the CHallenger will survive for longer than what is expected due to the current economic situation.

I am just happy these 2 cars are on the market again...giving the enthusiasts what they really want.
