Angry I thought my OEM hood was supposed to be aluminum?!

I have a 2011 GT premium 5.0, and I was under the impression that the stock hood was made from aluminum.. but I just noticed some paint bubbling on the front edge of the hood. Looks like a rock chipped it and rust is now beginning to spread under the paint..

WTH???
Am I going crazy? Since when does aluminum rust?!

This is a known problem with the '11 and I am sure some '12s too. Mine did the same thing and I had to take it back to Ford to get them to strip the hood and repaint the whole thing.

So the hood is steel then? Yikes! How much did that one cost you?

No, the hood is aluminum. The problem is that when ford prepped the hoods for paint some of the hoods had metal (iron) particles on them. This material starts to oxidize and can create rust pockets that chip off. The hood itself is fine but since the paint stuck to the iron, and the iron is now flaking off, the paint flakes off with it.

BTW this is an issue going back as far as 2005.

Take it to the dealership, have them fix it.

Nothing. Took it back 45 miles before the bumper to bumper was up and they fixed it under warranty.

Problem is the 2011's are dropping out of the bumper to bumper fast. Mine is out. If this becomes a problem for mine, Cervinis here I come!! $900'ish shipped vs. paying about that much to have the stock hood painted... (Almost want it to happen just so I have the excuse!)

Wow. looks like the hood actually IS aluminum, but there are issues with OEM prep and iron contamination;

Anyone know if there is an updated TSB like this^ for the 2011's ??

With right at 45K on mine, I'm having a LOT of issues with rock chips on the hood primarily and the fenders. This thing is like a stone magnet! It looks horrible in my opinion. I don't know if it is an issue with the materials or if the repair shop that painted the front pieces after my accident screwed up. I cry just about every time I wash the front b/c of all of the chips and dings.

according to http://www.motortrend.com/cars/2011/...tang/warranty/

and http://www.ford.com/cars/mustang/2013/warranty/

We have a 5 year unlimited mileage warranty against rust. Is this article correct? It also says 5 year 60k miles drivetrain. So you will probably have to wait a bit longer to have a valid excuse lol.
